Candidate pitches
Here are the pitches from 68 candidates running in the 2025 Edmonton Municipal Election. These are personal statements that candidates shared when completing their survey.
Ali Al Kassab
Candidate for councillor in Anirniq
Affiliation: IND
“My platform is built on a simple promise: to serve Ward Anirniq with integrity, accountability, and relentless focus on your priorities. I'm here to represent your choices, not make them for you. While Edmonton families struggle with a cost-of-living crisis and the city faces a massive deficit. City Council voted to give themselves a $10,000 raise. I refuse to accept it. If elected, I will not keep a single dime of that raise. Instead, I will immediately return every penny, $40,000 over the term directly to the people of Ward Anirniq. More support for seniors? A new youth program? Enhanced community safety? You name it. This isn't a gesture; it's a promise. Real leadership means standing for each other, not above each other. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. LET'S GET IT DONE. https://alialkassab.com/”
Fidel Ammar
Candidate for councillor in tastawiyiniwak
Affiliation: PACE
“I began his civic service journey in 1991 with the City of Edmonton DATS, later transitioning to ETS. Over 28 years in transit operations, he held various roles that have equipped me with a wealth of frontline experience, unwavering professionalism, and a record of outstanding punctuality. As a dedicated family man with three children, I have also built an extensive career in training and investigations. I combine sharp analytical skills with a deep sense of duty to my community as a Tastawiyiniwak for the past 52 years. Throughout my career, my commitment to service and integrity has defined both my professional and personal life.”

Sara Awatta
Candidate for councillor in pihêsiwin
Affiliation: IND
“I love this city, the neighbourhoods, the green spaces, and the way people show up for each other. As Edmonton grows, I hear the same concerns: we're paying more but getting less, with projects taking too long, transit not reliable enough, and small businesses facing too many barriers. I'm running as a truly independent candidate, not backed by a party or big corporations, to make sure your concerns are heard at City Hall. I've spent my career helping businesses and community groups solve problems and get results. I'll focus on affordability and fiscal responsibility, get projects done right and on budget, improve transit frequency, snow clearing, make streets safer with traffic calming and better lighting, and support youth programs and community leagues that keep neighbours connected.”

Paul Bakhmut
Candidate for mayor
Affiliation: IND
“Friends, We have an important election on October 20. Edmonton can continue down the same path with higher taxes, lower services, empty storefronts, orange cones and potholes everywhere, and more mediocrity with no sense of direction. Or we can be so much more. We can have a vibrant and safe downtown where families feel safe and businesses thrive. We can attract many new businesses that bring high-paying jobs to Edmonton. We can host big events that others wish they had. Fast, modern services that are a joy to use. More direct flights. Buses that run on time. And all the other things that matter to you. We won't achieve everything overnight, but it is worth a try. If you want a mayor who is not afraid to challenge the status quo, vote Paul Bakhmut on October 20.”

Jason Bale
Candidate for councillor in Karhiio
Affiliation: IND
“I believe effective leadership starts with listening. Real progress happens when we engage in open, honest dialogue and work together toward solutions. At a time when many feel unheard by elected officials, I'm committed to being a different kind of leader — one who puts your concerns first and takes action based on your feedback. Together, we can shape Edmonton's future with bold, decisive steps that reflect our community's values and create a city we can all be proud of.”

“I'm not a career politician — I'm a regular Edmontonian who shops at the same stores, drives the same roads, and faces the same challenges as you. I'm committed to listening to our community and focusing on practical solutions that improve daily life for everyone. My goal is to make decisions that reflect the needs of families, seniors, youth workers, and local businesses. I believe in using taxpayer dollars responsibly, supporting essential services, and building a city where people feel safe, included, and heard. Ronald Stewart Billingsley, Jr
Candidate for mayor
Affiliation: IND
“Many of these questions in this survey I did not consider in my platform on my website, and so I am glad I got to consider them here. It would be nice to sit down with the other candidates in a debate or conversation. For me, as I tried to make clear on my website, the City of Champions should be a beacon for real change in the City, and perhaps even the country as a whole. I would push for places of worship, like my own Catholic parish of St. Joseph's to contribute to property tax, and pay for an interim homeless shelter. Further, I am in Court against the Attorney General of Alberta and the City of Edmonton on September 18th at 10 AM to ask that permanent residents get the right to vote in this election. It would be a step further in the exemplar of multiculturalism that Canada is.”

Nurmaiya Brady
Candidate for councillor in Anirniq
Affiliation: BE
“Edmonton needs practical leadership that reflects the priorities of everyday people. The focus must be on getting back to basics by delivering dependable services and ensuring public dollars are spent wisely. Residents want common sense solutions that make a real difference—safer streets, reliable infrastructure, and a city that follows through. Communities thrive when safety is taken seriously, growth is managed responsibly, and local voices are respected. People are tired of being talked over. They want leaders who listen, show up, and act. Edmonton does not need more politics. It needs results.”

Joti Buttar
Candidate for councillor in Karhiio
Affiliation: BE
“I'm running because Edmonton needs better management, stronger communication, and a council that truly represents its people. For too long, projects have been mismanaged and allowed to go over budget. That's taxpayers' money, and we need to spend it smarter. Traffic is another issue that residents raise. We need better planning to keep people moving safely, reduce speeding, and change the way we build so congestion isn't the norm. Our houselessness crisis requires collaboration with the province and federal government to deliver support and services. I believe in strong community programs, reliable ways for people to get around, and leadership that listens. My commitment is to be accessible, transparent, and a voice for the community.”

Tim Cartmell
Candidate for mayor
Affiliation: BE
“Taxes are too high; People don't feel safe; Politics are performative; We spend too much money for too little return; and Edmonton City Hall is adrift. And you want it fixed. I'm not a career politician. I'm an engineer. When you hire an engineer, you expect solutions that work, and you expect every dollar to count. I carry an iron ring on my hand that reminds me of my obligation to serve the public with integrity and humility. That's the mindset I will bring to City Hall: practical, disciplined, and accountable. Edmonton is a city worth fighting for. It's where my wife Cathy and I grew up, where we raised our kids, where my grandfather worked as a carpenter and my father taught school while studying for his degree at night. Edmonton gave my family everything—and now, I want to give back.”

Tony Caterina
Candidate for mayor
Affiliation: IND
“I am a strong, tough leader who does not—and will not—play politics. As mayor, I will get the job done by building cooperation with City Councillors, with a tireless work ethic and no excuses. My top priorities as Edmonton's mayor will be fixing the broken areas of our city. Edmonton needs a decisive leader to tackle issues promptly and efficiently—without fail—while ensuring taxpayers' limited dollars are spent responsibly. Voters have a perfect opportunity to make a bold change and get our city back on track. With a fiscally conservative mayor elected, Edmonton can become stronger, more successful and a better city for all its citizens. It's time for the city to refocus on core municipal duties and prioritize responsible spending to keep taxes low.”

“They say experience matters—but experience without results has left Edmonton struggling. I've worked in the city of Edmonton as an employee for several years in field operation, Edmonton need a mayor who is hands on ,i have seen the waste firsthand, and understand how every department operates. I know what needs fixing and how to make it better. Political experience alone isn't enough—results are what count. “Team Taproot - Thank you for taking the time to hear my views while supporting a great local media organization. I love this city, and I love this community. As a born and raised Edmontonian I truly believe this city has amazing potential and I want to be part of seizing that opportunity. I hope I conveyed in my answers how much I care about making the responsible decisions that will make this city a place where everyone can be proud to call home. Ramey Demian
Candidate for councillor in Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi
Affiliation: IND
“I am running because Edmonton needs serious leadership, not job-seekers chasing titles. Too often, projects are over budget, delayed, or reactive instead of proactive. Families are paying higher taxes while roads crumble, businesses struggle, and safety concerns grow. Serving on the Assessment Review Board, I heard from many frustrated residents who felt their voices didn't matter. I bring 40 years of experience as an entrepreneur, real estate broker, and community advocate. I know how to ask tough questions, make hard decisions, and respect every tax dollar. My commitment is to represent residents with honesty, accountability, and care — to fix the basics, restore trust in City Hall, and make Edmonton safer, stronger, and more affordable. On Oct. 20, I would be honoured to earn your vote.”

Vanessa Denman
Candidate for mayor
Affiliation: IND
“My priority as mayor will be to ensure Edmonton can breathe—catching up on services and infrastructure for the people already here. Our capital projects and staffing must keep pace before we take on more growth. The province is exploring ways to better manage immigration levels so municipalities are not overwhelmed, and Edmonton must be part of that conversation. Locally, we must focus on housing where services already exist, including accelerating Blatchford and other serviced land. At the federal level, fiscal policies and rapid immigration have fueled inflation and housing pressures. Cities like Edmonton need coordinated policy from all orders of government so growth is sustainable, services are strong, and families can afford to thrive here.”

“When I first ran for this council role in 2021, over 5,100 neighbours trusted me with their vote, earning second place behind the incumbent. I've shown up before and after that election, through city boards like ETSAB, nonprofits, community leagues, and multicultural media, I bring these, combined with my business degree and experience as a newcomer. Danny Heikkinen
Candidate for councillor in sipiwiyiniwak
Affiliation: IND
“As a new councillor, my priority will be to ensure that we get value for our tax dollars, and that the results we get in our auditing are clearly communicated to the public. We need to give the people of Edmonton clarity and confidence in their municipal government. We have to make decisions that are based not only on clear evidence, but that can be defended and justified to the public. This prior council admitted that it failed in terms of communication, we cannot continue on the same path as before. More importantly, we need to make sure that the city plan reflects the concerns and priorities of the public, to ensure that we can better adapt to the concerns of our communities, instead of continuing on a path that does not allow for meaningful public consultation.”

Mark Hillman
Candidate for councillor in papastew
Affiliation: PACE
“In recent years, Edmonton has been led by a council that often puts ideology ahead of sound city management. What we need now is a council that's ready to do the work and refocus on the city's core responsibilities. If we fail to make that shift, we'll continue to see rising property taxes at a time when many are already facing economic uncertainty. I have the experience and the knowledge to help lead that change. If elected, I will do everything in my power to bring council back to focusing on what truly matters—delivering essential services and respecting your tax dollars.”

Terrie Holgerson
Candidate for councillor in papastew
Affiliation: IND
“With this election we have an opportunity to restart our city. There is so much potential we have overlooked and we continue to get in our own way. With hard work, learning, thinking, and integrity we can build the city we want. To move forward we must first get our spending in control, and live within our means. There will be some unpopular solutions that will need to be implemented and past expectations left in the past. We do not have to do this on our own, we have knowledge and examples of successful programs and cities form all around the world we can learn from. We have the very challenging opportunity to restart Edmonton's relationship with the Provincial Government as cooperative partners instead of advisories. Creating a city that welcomes investments, growth and stability.”

Rahim Jaffer
Candidate for mayor
Affiliation: IND
“We all know it — the city isn't working. People don't feel safe. Businesses can't thrive. We can't keep our streets clean or maintained. We're paying record-high taxes. And now, the people who made this mess are asking for a promotion. Edmonton doesn't need more of the same. We need a reset. I'm running to make our streets safe and clean, revive our businesses, and ensure our buses and trains are something people actually want to use — while making sure our most vulnerable get help and our public spaces belong to families once again. City Hall needs to work for everyone — from entrepreneurs and small business owners to families, artists, and musicians — because that's how we thrive. I'm Rahim Jaffer — the only candidate offering for all of Edmonton what Edmonton needs: change!”

“Hello neighbour, I'm running for re-election as an independent candidate- in other words I'm standing up for you. We're up against well-funded and connected corporate/UCP agendas and we need your help. Not the big corporate, landlord, and developer funded municipal parties. Not Premier Smith, the UCP, mayor and their team, but you. My family live in this ward and we are building a safer, more affordable, and welcoming city for everyone at all ages, wages, and stages of life. I have a plan to better manage our taxes through curbing small and fighting for a fair deal from the provincial government. I have a plan to lower your rent through more housing choices, offer better and faster transit, safe walking and cycling. Don't just read the survey, take action-- volunteer, donate, take a sign”

I've served as Chair of the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers and on the City's Anti-Racism Advisory Committee. I know how our systems work and will be ready to get to work for our community on day one. Our ward deserves a fighter at City Hall, someone who understands our communities and will stand up for them. Right now, our streets are less safe, our taxes keep rising while services decline. Roger Kotch
Candidate for councillor in sipiwiyiniwak
Affiliation: IND
“The City of Edmonton has never been so poorly managed in all the years I have lived here. This council is not accountable and has spent Billions on projects and purchases that have further increased our debt and raised taxes. To mention just one is the purchase of 82 million dollars of EV buses that we cannot utilize because of our winters, and further the company we purchased them from went bankrupt. This mismanagement is systemic through all the Cities departments and their is no accountability whatsoever. The public needs to know where their dollars are being spent, how much is being spent and what the benefits are. Edmonton has the second highest unemployment rate in Canada and crime is escalating at an intolerable rate. Its time we make our representatives accountable. Kotch.ca”

Larry Langley
Candidate for councillor in pihêsiwin
Affiliation: IND
“Over the last decade City council has ignored a vast proportion of its citizenry. There has been much talk but very little real listening done by many levels of government. Decisions are routinely made that result in generational debt. The LRT being a prime example of a decision that should have gone to a plebiscite. Decisions influenced by emotions of fear or anger instead of facts and figures. Bike lanes used by approximately 6% of the population taking away from traffic lanes in a winter city are another example of irrational decision making. These facts do not make you anti environment or anti bike it is simple math and can no longer be ignored. We need to get back in our lane and provide essential services at a high level.”

We are a growing city, both in needs and opportunities, and we need to plan for that growth, foster investment from risk takers, and ensure our infrastructure and public services keep up. Edmonton is facing complex problems that may not be in our jurisdiction to solve, but problems that we bear the consequences of inaction. We need expertise, leadership, and experience - qualities which I bring from a career serving on the front-lines and leadership in impactful non-profit health and social services, working collaboratively between all levels of government, and extensive governance experience from volunteer boards and community agencies. “Born and raised in Edmonton, I have been a long-time resident while spending from 2002 to 2012 teaching overseas. Returning to Canada in 2012, I lived in BC until returning to Edmonton in 2021. Today, I see a country where many have seem to have lost their way in drug addiction and a general sense of hopelessness as the things I took for granted when I was young seem unattainable. The greatest contribution I believe I offer in becoming councilor is my creativity and my central belief that every person is a spirit that is loved and valued by the Creative Spirit that made and connects us all. I believe we are all responsible for what we experience, which means we also all have the ability to change our lives. As a city, if we support one another, a happier, healthier city can be ours.”

“My name is Funke Olokude and I am running for Edmonton City Council in Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi. I am a longtime Edmontonian, mother of two, and community leader with over 15 years of experience tackling the issues that matter most to families: housing, health, transit, and community well-being. I am a social worker, teacher, and community advocate. I am running becauase Edmonton is working harder than ever to make ends meet. City Council isn't helping Edmontonians keep up. That's a problem. Lana Palmer
Candidate for councillor in Dene
Affiliation: IND
“I am concerned for the future as are many Albertans. I am running because I want Edmonton to be successful and innovative. We need to position our city for the future and I am a forward-thinking individual that can help. We need an agile city that is adaptable to the new economy. Things are changing, and we saw that play out very clearly with Covid 19. Change is here to stay, and we need to adjust and learn how to operate differently. I believe I have the analytical skills, education, drive, and intuition to help us move in that direction. I bring a voice of moderation. I do not believe we need to be radical to succeed; we need to be intelligent and strategic.”

“Hello Ward Dene, This campaign isn't just about another election—it's about us and the future we're building together. Over the past 8 years, we've seen record investment and growth in our communities, making the northeast a place where families and businesses thrive. Edmonton deserves steady leadership and practical solutions that put your needs first. I believe in a city that works for all of us: safe, clean, affordable, and built to last. My family and I have put everything we've got into serving you and your family. You deserve nothing less. I'd love to hear what matters most to you. Share your ideas at aaron4dene.ca.”

Norm Paradis
Candidate for councillor in Métis
Affiliation: IND
“I live in the house my family has owned since 1974. I have watched this city grow and I have also watched as city council has lost its way. I want to help bring this city back to responsible spending on infrastructure. I also want to make our citizens feel safe using our public transportation as well as making sure infill building is done responsibly. No more Wild West type of structures that congest already full neighborhoods. As a council member my main priority will be to make sure we are getting full value for the money that we as taxpayers give to the city to maintain infrastructure, such as roads, sewers, transit etc. A vote for Norm Paradis is a responsible vote.”
Thu Parmar
Candidate for councillor in sipiwiyiniwak
Affiliation: IND
“Hi I'm Thu Parmar. I have served as a pharmacist, government employee, president of Cameron Heights community league and VP of the Canadian Red Cross. What sets me apart, is my experience working in and with all levels of government. From managing Jasper and Indigenous disasters, to building a community hall and working with many city departments. I have shown the ability to get things done while having experience in the public, business, private and non profit space, working with hundreds of elected officials across all party lines. I'm a leader that brings people together and not one that divides us. Note: This survey asks for absolute stances on issues, decisions need to be tailored to neighbourhoods and we need leadership that understands this complexity and is willing to dig deeper.”

“Edmonton is at a pivotal moment. Our country faces global trade pressures, and our province struggles with health care, education, and rising separatism. Here in Edmonton, change has been so rapid that people don't always feel heard or included. That's why I'm running—to ensure Edmonton leads by building stronger foundations and bringing people along. In uncertain times, we must lean in and seize the moment. So I'll focus on value for money, a future-ready economy, opportunities for our youth, community safety, reliable and safe transit, climate-ready communities, and ensuring we are financially strong to handle future uncertainties. My priorities are practical, forward-looking, and fiscally responsible—building a strong foundation for Edmonton to lead.”

“Jennifer is an active community leader who is inspired by Edmonton's relentless innovation, celebration of diversity, and environmental leadership. Edmontonians are known as creative, forward-thinking, generous, and compassionate. While some politicians want us to be ashamed of who we are as Canadians and Edmontonians, Jennifer believes we must continue to lead with love—pushing back against ideologies of fear, scarcity, and exclusion and to continue being the welcoming risk-takers that we already are. Loving Where We Live means that Edmonton is a place to celebrate. We are great at building homes, leading on climate and the 132 Avenue Complete Street is among the best in North America. “For too long, City Council has ignored the voices of Edmontonians. Many residents no longer feel safe in their own communities, and I am committed to restoring safety across our city. Major decisions—such as blanket rezoning bylaws and spending hundreds of millions of dollars on bike lanes—were made without meaningful consultation. I believe Edmontonians deserve better. That's why I will ensure your voice is part of every decision, and I will represent you with transparency and accountability if elected.”

Steve van Diest
Candidate for councillor in Sspomitapi
Affiliation: PACE
“Our current council has taken our city in a direction opposed to what our constituents want. We need a fiscal responsible council that focuses on the base services of the city and to do those core services at a high level, rather than spreading the city resources thin and having poor services all around. As your councillor I will be a strong voice for the services our communities need to thrive and do it in a fiscally responsible manner to avoid tax increases.”

Michael Walters
Candidate for mayor
Affiliation: IND
“I'm running for mayor because Edmonton feels stuck, and we can do better. My priorities are clear: make our transit system 100% safe, build 5,000 rental homes every year, and keep tax increases at or below inflation so families can stay and thrive. I'll launch All In On Kids, Canada's largest after-school recreation program, cut red tape so small businesses can grow, and focus spending where it matters. I'll work with the Province to reduce homelessness through housing, treatment, recovery, and supportive housing, and expand mental health teams. I'll freeze transit fares, finish Blatchford and Exhibition Lands, and cut construction delays by 25%. As a leader, I'll work with the Province and Ottawa. Let's build a safer, more affordable, more vibrant city we are proud to call home today.”

Jesse Watson
Candidate for councillor in Anirniq
Affiliation: IND
“I bring a background in economics, city planning, heritage conservation, running as small business and being a former manager in city operations. Edmonton can grow well, but with fiscal discipline. Accountability means how we communicate, how we spend, and how we oversee the money we entrust to agencies and groups. Terms like "return on investment" and "affordable housing" must be backed by results that make sense for taxpayers. In the past four years, taxes, debt, vacancy, homelessness, consultation and infill policy are at an extreme. We need business acumen at City Hall. The City has a social duty—rec centers, housing, policing, fire—but as a 4 billion corporation, we have a duty to ensure taxes are fair and ensure Edmontonians get the services they expect.”
